Music and concerts
We are passionate about music at Wharncliffe Side. We are proud of our talents in this area. All children learn an instrument as part of their class or year group from Class 2 upwards. Children learn the following instruments:
Class 2 ocarinas
Year 3 descant recorders
Year 4 violins or tenor recorders
Class 5 ukuleles
In the summer term we hold our annual concert. This is a musical extravaganza to showcase all the wonderful music that we do throughout the year. The children perform as a class, demonstrating skills on the instruments that they have been learning as a class and through singing.
We believe that singing lies at the heart of music and we sing enthusiastically! This can be seen and heard in our harvest festival, in class assemblies and in the school summer concert. We perform at events for the community like the Oughtibridge gala and the local senior citizens Christmas tea party.
Because we value singing, all KS2 children have a weekly singing session run by Paul Hawksworth, (our vocal coach and guitar instructor). Children also have opportunity to play their guitars in this session which helps to give them confidence to perform.
Children are encouraged to take up other instruments throughout school (from Year 2 upwards). At the moment we offer guitar, violin, flute, piano and cornet sessions (paid for by parents). Approximately 30% of our children participate in additional music tuition.
Please ask at the school office if your child is interested in having additional instrumental lessons.
We also have a large school orchestra. We have an orchestra session each week and children develop skills of playing in a big group. Again, we showcase our skills in our summer concert.
