Art

Art

By the end of year 6 we want the children at Wharncliffe Side Primary School to be able to:

  • Enjoy creating pieces of art.
  • Be able to use a range of different art techniques.
  • Express themselves through art.
  • Express their thoughts about a particular piece of art using the language of art e.g. line, tone, form, space, texture.

Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination, in addition to promoting personal, social, moral and cultural understanding. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world.  Understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts have the power to enrich our lives.

At the centre of our art and design curriculum are the basics of painting, drawing, textiles, collage, printing and sculpture. Children in KS2 have the opportunity to complete at least 1 project in each of the six areas in LKS2 and UKS2. Children in KS1 have the opportunity to complete 1 project in painting, textiles, collage, printing and sculpture and 2 projects in drawing. Where possible, the projects are linked to the class’ current topic, but if necessary, the art and design lessons will be taught discreetly.

We give children various opportunities throughout the year to take part in art competitions such as designing Christmas cards for our local councillor and entering the Sheffield Young Artist competition. Through these events, the children have the opportunity to have their work displayed for members of the public, and attend events celebrating art at the Town Hall.

Nurturing confidence, nurturing potential, nurturing success.
