Science

Science

By the end of year 6 we want the children at Wharncliffe Side Primary School to be able to:

  • Build upon their natural curiosity about the world allowing them to experience and explore using all their senses
  • Investigate and question phenomena observed and experienced, within a wide variety of situations
  • Develop their own investigation skills through the scientific enquiry types
  • Know more and remember more scientific knowledge through the programmes of study
  • Develop an understanding of the importance of scientific discovery in the development of our modern-day world
  • Develop a respect for the environment and all living things
  • Develop an awareness of health and safety issues

Science teaching at Wharncliffe Side Primary School aims to give all children a strong understanding of the world around them, whilst acquiring specific skills and knowledge to help them think scientifically. Children at Wharncliffe Side will also gain an understanding of the uses and implications of science today and for the future as well as science in a real-life context.

Scientific knowledge is taught and learnt together with the scientific enquiry types (Pattern seeking, Researching, Observing, Identifying, Classifying, Grouping and Comparative testing.) Children are taught scientific enquiry skills which allows them to carry out successful scientific enquiry and inspire their natural curiosity. Scientific knowledge is revisited and developed throughout their time at school. Topics, such as Plants, are taught in Key Stage One and studied again in further detail throughout Key Stage Two, this allows children to increase their enthusiasm for topics.

Nurturing confidence, nurturing potential, nurturing success.
