At Wharncliffe Side Primary School we aspire for all children to develop a love of languages and to expand their horizons to other countries, cultures and people. Ultimately it is our desire to help children grow into enthusiastic, confident, resilient and reflective language learners and to provide them with a foundation that will equip them for further language studies.
To do this we offer weekly Spanish lessons, incorporate Spanish into routines and transitions throughout the day and have a whole school celebration day for European Languages Day.
Our carefully chosen scheme of work builds on prior learning and allows opportunities for revision of language and grammar before introducing new skills. Essentially it incorporates the 3 pillars of language learning: Phonics, vocabulary and grammar and provides themes that give children practical introductions to the culture of Spanish-speaking countries and communities with regular opportunities to listen to native speakers. The aim is to ensure that children have the opportunities to broaden and deepen their linguistic knowledge and to improve retention and embed learning in long-term memory.
By the time children leave Wharncliffe Side they will be able to:
- Listen attentively & show understanding by joining in & responding in conversations, using questioning and seeking clarification and help
- Explore the patterns & sounds of language through songs & rhymes & link the spelling, sound & meaning of words;
- Speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures;
- Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases;
- Present ideas and information orally to a range of audiences;
- Read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing;
- Appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language;
- Broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary;
- Write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences, to express ideas clearly;
- Describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing;
- Understand basic Spanish grammar, how to apply it and how it differs from or is similar to English.
- Feel confident and excited to continue their Spanish learning in KS3.
