Class One We have had a very busy first term in Class One. Our reception children have settled in very well and we have enjoyed our first topic ‘Penguins and Polar Bears’. In our English work, we have been learning some stories related to our topic such as ‘Polar bear polar bear, what do you hear’ by Bill Martin, ‘lost and found’ by Oliver Jeffers and ‘Penguin’ by Polly Dunbar. We have also learnt how to write a recount to record some of our exciting events and even learnt how to write letters, in order to send them to Santa! For our reception children our maths has been taught through our good friends – the number blocks! The children have enjoyed learning their numbers to 10 through a more in depth approach covering counting forwards and backwards and fully understanding the value of each number. Our Y1 children have been learning about place value and addition. They have enjoyed the practical approaches to maths this half term as we have been incorporating elements of Active Maths into their sessions. This makes learning fun and more memorable. Our topic work has involved learning where penguins and polar bears live. In Geography we have learnt about the Arctic and Antarctic. We have also discovered the names of the world’s continents and Oceans. In Science we have been learning about animals, identifying the body parts of animals and their suitability to their environments. We have learnt what animal group’s different animals belong to and what they like to eat. In Art we have learnt how to mix colours, we know what primary and secondary colours are and how to make different shades by adding white. We know what hot and cold colours are and have focussed on cold colours to make Arctic style pictures. We have recreated the work of Ruby Freesia to make our ‘shivering Arctic’ designs. We always try to involve parents in our learning in Class One. We began the term with a teddy bears picnic to welcome everyone into school life and have a reunion with some of our nursery friends. We then had a wonderful ‘festivals’ themed workshop where parents supported the children to make crafts related to different festivals being celebrated in the Autumn all around the world. As Christmas approached we had lots of fun preparing for our Foundation Stage and KS1 performances and in class we were busy making lists to Santa, as well as cards and calendars to end the year. As a special treat we were lucky enough to be visited by the man himself on our Christmas party day and were lucky to all receive presents. We have had an amazing, memorable first half term.
